Pacific Coast Railway
The Seasider takes passengers on a spectacular half-day
Pacific Coast train trip, Dunedin to Palmerston and return.
Take in Dunedin’s picturesque harbourside suburbs and
rail causeway, Mihiwaka hill climb, intriguing history and
spectacular cliff-top coastal scenery en route to Palmerston,
a busy highway town. Visit the museum, cafés and shops before returning to Dunedin.
The Seasider carriages are fully enclosed
and have heating. There is an informative
live commentary.
Souvenirs, light foods, tea, coffee, wines,
ales and other drinks are for sale on board.
Major credit cards are accepted. Sorry, eftpos
is not available on board.
Wheelchair access is normally
available– please reserve this in
advance. Toiletsare situated on
board.
Pay & Display parking is available
at Dunedin Railway Station.
One way fares are available.

Railroad to Gold Tour
1. Dunedin to Palmerston
on ‘The Seasider’...
Your adventure begins when
you board ‘The Seasider’ train
at Dunedin Railway Station and
travel along the beautiful Pacific coastline to the township of
Palmerston.

Palmerston to Macraes for a tour of New Zealand’s largest gold mine...
At Palmerston,you will be met by your guide and coach to drive you to the little
town of Dunback for a hearty roast lunch at the historic Highwayman Hotel. After
lunch we drive into the hills to the village of Macraes where you are introduced
to the world of modern and heritage gold mining via an audio-visual presentation
at the Oceana Gold Education Centre. Then it’s into the mine itself and we travel
around the mine site visiting the enormous Fraser’s open cast pit and the vehicle
maintenance base where you see the 1900hp CAT dump trucks being serviced.

Step back in time at the historic Golden Point reserve,site of the original mining
activity in the 1800s. View the battery stamper and take a walk into one of the
old mine shafts that dot the hillside. We return to the present-day operation
and tour the gold processing plant where you will see the processing systems
in action,winning the gold from the rock. Finally,visit the only rainbow trout
breeding facility in the South Island where your guide will try to catch one of
the big fish, up to 3kg (61/2lb) in size.

Macraes to Dunedin on ‘Taieri Gorge Railway’...
After Macraes,your coach
will take you over Hyde Hill
and down the dramatic Strath
Taieri to Pukerangi.Board the
world-famous ‘Taieri Gorge
Railway’ for your journey back
to Dunedin Railway Station.
